One-time Khmer Rouge torture centre chief Duch arrives at a court in Phnom Penh to learn the outcome of his appeal.

A lot of other people turned up at the U.N.-backed genocide court in Cambodia's capital, too, for the same reason.

The court upheld its conviction against him for his role in more than 14, 000 deaths at the notorious Tuol Sleng prison camp during the 1970s.

And it went further by raising his original jail term to life.

Duch, whose real name is Kaing Guek Eav, was originally sentenced to 35 years, commuted to 19 years because of time already served in military detention.

He was convicted in July 2010 of murder, torture, rape and crimes against humanity.

Duch had argued the court had no jurisdiction to try him because he was not a senior commander of Pol Pot's regime under which up to 2.2 million people died.

Prosecutors and civil parties in the also appealed against the sentence originally handed down which outraged survivors of the Cambodia's 'killing fields' reign of terror.
