In the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa, most of the household energy is derived from wood and charcoal obtained by cutting illegally in primary forest zones like the Virungas National Park. Farm sizes are becoming increasingly small and farmers are obtaining additional incomes from charcoal production and selling.
