Chapter 1 Proyecto Asis

This is chapter 1 of my great Costa Rican adventure of 2012. I spent 2 weeks at Proyecto Asis in Ciudad Quesada near Fortuna. In the mornings I took Spanish lessons from the fabulous Analia and the afternoons were spent working with and for the animals. I raked, fed, painted wire for the pens, whatever needed done. I even "assisted" (read: held the animal and my breath) in a couple of operations. I was even the official videographer for the release of the injured sloth! The center arranged for me to home-stay with a local family which was an amazing lesson in how people can communicate other than through language and in kindness and acceptance. Volunteering is a great way to be part of something that you believe in and as a solo traveler it gave me a connection with Costa Rican people. I highly recommend it.
