DVD ENCODING COMPARISON

Comparing Time-Life's complete first season DVD release (and possibly all others) of this well known late 1960s comedy/variety show with the correctly authored 2003 Rhino 'best of' release. This video highlights the difference it makes on motion and basically turns a video produced show that had a live feel to it into one with a more stuttered feel to any motion - hand gestures, camera moves, zooms, dancing etc are all affected. On these new releases it now plays more like film than the immediacy of the original video. The end credits roller shows this very clearly with the new 2017 version twice as coarse in the movement as it should be.

The reason this comparison has to be at half speed is due to the way platforms like Youtube and most codecs on PCs perform a de-interlace automatically on video, so at normal speed watching online you probably wouldn't see a difference. Of course watching the DVD on a TV set-up and the difference is noticeable at normal speed on all the motion. In addition, for the 2017 DVD the 4:3 image has been placed within a widescreen border so that the actual archive picture resolution is reduced horizontally from 720 pixels to 540.
