Hermann's Tortoise
It’s getting warmer and drier in the Mediterranean
Drought is extending in the South of Europe, meaning the fires in the Mediterranean shrubland and woodland last longer and are more intense.
Hermann's tortoise is a terrestrial tortoise that can live for one hundred years in the shrublands and grasslands in European Mediterranean countries. It never strays far from its place of origin and can return to it if it is taken somewhere else, thanks to its highly developed sense of direction. Its current predators are agricultural machines, lawnmowers, dogs and those who want it as a pet. Now this reptile faces another problem – the current climate change in the South of Europe. The frequency of fires throughout the Mediterranean basin is increasing and more than one million hectares of forests are destroyed by fire each year. And even if these fires are in most cases caused by people, the reality is that the drought that is intensifying through current climate change is causing the fires to spread further and last much longer.
